Teacher and student join forces!

From 13 to 16 February 2020, the joint exhibition of Riet Mooren and Rohan Kumara will take place in the Art Chapel Amsterdam.

Riet Mooren has been teaching expressive drawing and painting at various locations in Nijmegen and the surrounding area for over forty years. In recent years, she has also supported mentally disabled people in their creative development. "Art must make the soul visible," is her motto. She has been painting and drawing from an early age. “It started out as a realistic, but now I am more and more abstract and I started using materials that I came across. Started with a thread but in the course of time it became all kinds of materials that I accidentally come across, "says Riet.

Also by chance she came into contact with Rohan Kumara (34), born in Sri Lanka ten years ago and adopted as a baby by a couple in the Achterhoek where he also grew up. Riet handed me a paintbrush and I noticed that I could suddenly turn negative thoughts into positive emotions, worked better for me than medication and conversations,”says Rohan. “When I paint, I get into a kind of trance and things pass unnoticed that I don't want to think about. When the work is finished I do recognize my life story and has the feeling been given a place on the canvas,"says Rohan, who works largely abstractly with mixed techniques.

The exhibition of Riet Mooren and Rohan Kumara shows the special bond between the two artists; teacher and student. “For me it is a dream come true and at the same time, partly thanks to the beautiful things I learned from Riet, a conclusion of a period. But also the beginning of a new chapter because together we have the authentic gallery online curated by Bart Bogers. We exhibit our own work there, but also give fellow artists the opportunity to participate, ”according to both.
